ULTRA Q

ULTRA Q is monochromatic SFX TV series broadcast weekly from January 2 through July 3, 1966 in Japan.

ULTRA Q started to be broadcast after all its 26 episodes had been shot and 35mm films were used ,not 16mm ones, like movies.

As a matter of fact, I am not sure whether I watched ULTRA Q on time. But I can imagine the wonder and excitement the children in front of a TV set should have had when the well-known opening title of ULTRA Q started.

ULTRA Q is litellaly the origin of the ULTRA SERIES and is the beginning of its legend.

It can be said that ULTRA Q is the first legitimate SFX TV program in Japan.

It must have been sort of epoch-making that you can watch an full-scaled SFX series on TV in the living room in those days.

SHIN TEZUKA who is the son of famous OSAMU TEZUKA,the representative comic artist of Japan, remembers he was more absorbed in ULTRA Q than WONDER 3 which was also broadcast almost the same time as ULTRA Q and is one of his father’s work.

In a meening, the origin of ULTRA Q is GODJILLA.
Because ULTRA SERIES is created by TSUBURAYA PRODUCTION which EIJI TSUBURAYA, SFX DIRECTOR of GODJILLA MOVIES, founded.

As you know,GODJILLA is a KAIJYU,monster, which stars in the movies GODJILLA SERIES already so popular at that time.

You can imagine the excitement children charmed with GODJILLA had when facing KAIJYU monsters on TV at home!

It is said that the Crown Prince wedding in 1959 and the TOKYO OLYMPIC GAMES in 1964 spurred the spread of TV sets at home all over the country.

The times were moving forward from the movie to the television.

Early ULTRA SERIES

In my childhood, we had a hero named ULTRAMAN.

Along with his successor ULTRA SEVEN,ULTRAMAN made me charmed as I found him very cool and stylish.

The monsters and aliens generally named as ULTRA KAIJYU were also charmful and attractive.

Each ULTRA KAIJYU in the early ULTRA SERIES characteristically has its own reason, raison d’etre, to appear not just popping up suddenly and rampaging, which makes the episodes all the deeper.

Not all of them are evil and the human beings are not always their victim.

Each character and episode are very much well-made and as attractive as they were in the days back.
